Clinical drawings for your patients: Prostate diseases and their treatments

Thursday, 10 June2010 - Men consulting a physician for prostate disease are increasingly wanting to be more informed about their disease. Although at present the Internet provides ample information which are easily available, most of the information is incomprehensible to patients or are erroneous. For these reasons, the physician must remain or retain the role of the privileged informant. The third edition of this book, written by R. Kirby, was intended to help physicians explain to their patients the various features of the prostate and information on prostate diseases.

With a short introduction, the book is divided in two main parts dedicated to BPH and prostate cancer. A short chapter dedicated to prostatitis concludes the book. Basic information is given about prostate location and function before explaining prostate enlargement and its symptoms. Assessment of prostate problems is briefly described such as medical management of BPH. Principles of various operations are presented, including recently developed minimally invasive techniques.

Natural history of prostate cancer, diagnostic methods and complimentary investigations are described such as various surgical and non-surgical treatments including recent advances such as robotics. Hormonal treatments of metastatic disease and palliative care are also covered.

The main advantage of this pocket book is its presentation. Each left page contains concise text and the opposite (right page) contains related figures of high quality. Such a presentation makes it easily understandable to a non-physician. The author apparently conceived this textbook especially for photocopying. Physicians and other care providers will undoubtedly find in this book an excellent tool for patient’s education and we hope other urological topics will be presented or edited in the same way.
