7th SEEM: poster session on bladder cancer and uretheral surgery

Poster session, 7th SEEM

Saturday, 15 October 2011- From the abstracts accepted for the presentations at the EAU 7th South Eastern European Meeting (SEEM), we reproduced below in its original version one of the submitted abstracts from Iran dealing with the link of Human Papillomavirus Infection with the grade of urinary bladder cancer:

M.R. Barghi and colleagues conducted a study to determine the correlation between Human Papillomavirus Infection (HPV) and grade and stage of Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC).

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was used to detect HPV and HPV16 and 18 subtypes in 110 bladder tissue and urine specimens of patients with transitional cell carcinoma of bladder.

The results showed that of the 110 patients, mean age was 61.6±10 years and fourteen (12.7%) of patients were female. PCR for HPV was positive in 40 (36.4%) of bladder tissue  specimens. 25 (22.7%) and 27 (24.5%) of them had positive results for HPV 16 and 18 subtypes, respectively. 37 (33.6%) of urine specimens were positive for HPV using PCR and HPV16 and 18 subtypes were positive in 17 (15.5%) and 14 (12.7%) of urine specimens, respectively.

Bladder tissue HPV was positive in 3 (9.4%), 22 (38.6%) and 15 (71.4%) of Ta, T1 and T2 bladder tumors, respectively (p<0.001). Bladder tissue HPV16 was positive in (6.3%), 10 (17.5%) and 13 (61.9%) and bladder tissue HPV18 was positive in 1 (3.1%), 14 (24.6%) and 12 (57.1%) of Ta, T1 and T2 bladder tumors, respectively (p<0.001, p<0.001).

Bladder tissue HPV was positive in 9 (15%) and 31 (62%) of low and high grade tumors, respectively (p<0.001). Bladder tissue HPV16 was positive in 3 (5%) and 22 (44%) and bladder tissue HPV18 was positive in 3 (5%) and 24 (48%) of low and high grade tumors, respectively (p<0.001, p<0.001).

"HPV infection may accompany with higher stages and grades of  bladder carcinomas,” the researchers concluded.
